Rwanda – Bwenda Lot 578
Bernard Uwitije, owner of Bwenda, is a native of Nyamagabe a district of southern Rwanda. Coffee is the dominant crop in this region and Bernard first entered the sector trading ordinary home processed coffee. Later he learned of the added value of processing fully and wanting to set up a more significant and sustainable business in the coffee sector, he built his first wet mill near his hometown in 2016.
Bernard used the first year to learn all the details of operating a wet mill successfully, and he built a second Washing station the following season, where he then mastered processing larger volumes of green coffee beans without compromising quality. Bwenda is his third washing station, which he
built in 2018 after realizing that a group of farmers who were a bit isolated, did not have access to a washing station where their ripe coffee cherries could be processed into high quality coffee. In 2019, Bwenda’s first season just 1 container worth of cherries were processed. But Bernard is already developing various programs to help farmers within Bwenda’s catchment area to grow and deliver high quality cherries and is working to expand the capacity of his wet mill.
This beautiful lot that we have secured is our first Rwandan coffee processed using the natural method and we hope that you will enjoy its raspberry wine, tropical fruit and dark chocolate complexity as much as we do.
